Brightlands Plant Open Datahub (POD)

Background

The Brightlands Plant Open Data Hub (POD) is a new open-science initiative led by the Brightlands Future Farming Institute (BFFI), Maastricht University, to develop a next-generation digital infrastructure for plant and crop research. Modern plant science increasingly relies on the integration of diverse datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, phenomics, imaging, greenhouse measurements, environmental sensors, and field observations. While these technologies generate unprecedented volumes of data, the resulting datasets are often stored in isolated systems, described using inconsistent metadata standards, and difficult to integrate across projects and institutions. As a result, valuable scientific knowledge remains fragmented, limiting reproducibility, reuse, and large-scale discovery. The vision of POD is to create a sample-centric, FAIR-by-design infrastructure that connects biological samples, experimental metadata, analytical workflows, and scientific knowledge into a single interoperable ecosystem. Unlike traditional repositories that focus primarily on storing datasets, POD places biological samples at the centre of the data lifecycle. This enables researchers to trace information from greenhouse and field experiments through multiple layers of biological data, creating a complete digital representation of each experiment. By linking phenotypic observations, environmental conditions, and multi-omics measurements through standardized metadata and persistent identifiers, POD will significantly improve data discoverability, interoperability, and reproducibility.
